Departed Opening Sequence

Construction Post 4

On the 8th March 2016, we have finished filming our opening sequence to a Thriller film, and are editing the final parts, such as adding titles etc. We are improving on our first draft by adding music, changing the font for the titles and adding transitions when needed. We also edited the lighting in the detective scene, just to focus on the brother's face better and changed the place the main title comes up 'Departed'. Our film is called DEPARTED, which we chose because of the idea about the train leaving, which separates the brother and sister.

Construction Post 3

First draft feedback
WWWs:

  • Excellent lighting during detective scene.
  • Creative camera work throughout.
  • Strong sound. e.g when the train arrives.
  • Effective colouring of shots.
  • On track for an A.
EBIs:

  • All titles needed, e.g main title.
  • How does the sequence end? Not clear.
  • Shot at 1:51 is out of focus.
  • Font is ok, but could be improved.
  • Music needed towards the end to build up tension.
We will respond to the EBIs by adding appropriate titles with the correct fonts to suit our genre. We will edit the ending of our piece to make it easier to understand, for  example adding another graphic match. Also we have a different shot that is in focus that we can use for 1:51, so we will use that instead and put in music where ended to create suspense and tension.

Coursework Target Grade: A.
Current Grade: C+, 36/60 marks.
Date marked: 10/03.

Construction Post 2

On 2nd February 2016, we filmed shots 1-8 and 13 successfully, and we also recorded sound using the sound recorder. We have now started the editing process, of them shots we have filmed so far. Later, on 9th February 2016 we filmed at Sutton Common railway where we got shots 9, 14, 16, 21, 22, 23 and 24 as well as some unplanned, extra establishing shots if we need some extra shots in the future. We have decided we need to go back to the station to film shots 15 and 10 as we will need the fig rig to ensure it is steady as when we tried to do these handheld they were too shaky. We will also need to film shots 12, 17, 18, 19, and 20 in the detective room and we plan to film all these shots on Friday 26th February 2016.

Updated Animatic

We have responded to audience feedback as we updated our animatic to make the improvements. For example, we sorted out the titles to make sure they fit the screen better and also changed the image size of the ident so all the video fits to the screen. We also changed how loud the train sounds were to make them more noticeable and added a transition where a graphic match was used to show the effect.

Locations For Our Opening Sequence

Powered by emaze

Construction Post 1

We have decided to change the main female character to a male due to the fact Sarah Broadbent, who was going to play Jennifer Beckett, isn't available to fit in with our shooting schedule. Therefore we changed it to a male, called James Beckett and is now going to be played by me, Sam Witheridge as it fits with our shooting schedule. As well as not fitting with the shooting schedule, the film would have looked more conventional with a male protagonist trying to find his sister than the other way around.

Props & Costume for our Opening Sequence

We chose the costume as smart and formal for the detective because it shows he has authority in this situation, and shows the audience what his job is. The brother and sister are wearing formal/casual clothes to suggest they are as normal as everyone else, and a big shock happens in their life which suggest to do audience they didn't expect it was going to happen.

Fonts For Opening Sequence

I chose this font because its plain and simple, and also has a little scratchy effect to it which could represent the idea of a thriller. It is good for our target audience, which is males and females under the age of 25, because its simple and sets the scene for what our film is about.

I chose this font because its simple once again and is clear what the wiritng is saying. Also it is bold which could show a type of thriller and presents the words in a way which makes the audience attracted to them.

Lastly, I chose this font because it has a dripping effect on the letters. This could represent blood which is usually present within the thriller genre. Also creates the effect of danger which is present within our opening sequence, and gives our target audience an idea of what the film will be about.
